Summary by Robert Diehl. Thanks!: (Marvel Graphic Novel #4) Writer: Chris Claremont Penciler: Bob McLeod Inker: Bob McLeod Letterer: Tom Orzechowski Colorist: Glynis Wein Editor: Louise Jones Editor in Chief: Jim Shooter "Renewal" Synopsis: Moira, enjoying the Scottish outdoors, is hurdled by a wolf who turns into a girl and asks for help. Moira recognizes Rahne, sees that she has been shot, and realizes she is a young mutant. Craig and an enraged mob arrive to kill the girl as a witch, but Moira orders them off her land and decides to take Rahne to Xavier. In Rio de Janeiro, Roberto plays soccer, is bullied by Keller, and manifests his power for the first time, throwing the young racist across the stadium, and the crowd flees in terror. We learn that he is being monitored by Pierce. In Cameron County, Kentucky, the newly fatherless Sam begins working in a coal mine to support the family. There is a cave-in, and Sam's power manifests for the first time, rocketing himself and Lewis to safety. Pierce looks on. In the Medicine Bow Mountains near Sundance, Dani enjoys the Colorado outdoors and her cougar Ridge-Runner. Black Eagle arrives, telling her about Xavier's school. She is outraged that he would send her to a white, and her power manifests, projecting Black Eagle's fears visually. She apologizes and agrees to go to Xavier. Pierce looks on and tells a captive Tessa that he plans to eliminate Sebastian Shaw and the other mutants from the Hellfire Club. Dani awakes at midnight to discover Black Eagle beaten to death (which had been his fear). She vows revenge. In Westchester, Xavier and Moira run tests on Shan (who was referred to them by Reed Richards in Uncanny X-Men 165), then convince her to demonstrate her power. She possesses Moira, alarming Rahne. She relates her history: a Vietnamese "boat person," her parents were killed escaping, so she is the sole support of her brother Leong and sister Nga. Her dead brother Tran was an evil mutant. Moira convinces Xavier that although they believe the X-Men to be dead (actually detained by the Brood: see Uncanny X-Men #161), the dream is still good. He agrees to begin again with the New Mutants. Xavier brings Rahne and Shan to Colorado in time for Black Eagle's funeral, and Dani attacks them, projecting Shan's fear of war-time helicopters. Simultaneously Pierce's minions attack, killing Ridge Runner. The attack is beaten off, and Xavier prevents Dani from killing in revenge of her grandfather. Moira takes Dani and Shan to Rio, and they are arrested on suspicion of abducting Juliana. The girls escape and find Roberto in time to help him fight off Juliana's real abductors (more of Pierce's minions). Juliana, however, is killed. Xavier takes Rahne to Kentucky and is attacked by Sam, who is now working for Pierce. Rahne escapes, but Xavier is taken to a fortified camp, where Pierce plans to tap his brain. Rahne quickly infiltrates, Sam attacks her, Dani scares him off, Roberto trashes the complex, Rahne bites Pierce's bionic arm and is kicked across the room, Sam knocks down Roberto, Pierce stuns Shan, Sam refuses to kill, so Pierce turns on him, Rahne frees Xavier, and he takes over Pierce's mind and gives him to Tessa to deal with. The team takes Rahne to the hospital, leaving Sam behind. Two weeks later in the mansion, the team assembles in uniform, and Xavier announces that Sam will be joining the team.
